What is West Nile Virus?

West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne virus (arbovirus) that was originally found in Africa. In 1999, it was detected in New York when several birds in the Bronx Zoo mysteriously died. WNV has now spread across the country and has become endemic in the United States.
West Nile Virus belongs to a larger group of viruses that includes Dengue, Japanese Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, and Yellow Fever.
